Facebook Advertising Day 2 Results for the LuvBritney.com Project

I just wanted to give a quick update as the to luvbritney.com project.

The main site was completed on Feb 7th, but I have been adding bits and pieces here and there as the need for improvements arrives.  My first task was to promote the site on Facebook.  As I said in my previous post I felt this was the best avenue as I could specifically target Britney fans.

I did a quick search on Google to see if I could find any coupon codes for Facebook advertising.  I figured I may as well get as much free advertising as I could, that way if this thing bombs I can at least say it didn’t cost me anything.  My only experience with Facebook advertising is with affiliate marketing which in the past has not performed all that well.  If you do do any advertising on Facebook I suggest you do a bit of searching for coupon codes.  Most that you find will only work for new advertising accounts (which I did not have), but I did find a Visa Business App that gives $100 of free advertising if you sign up.  So I did!

After the campaign was set up I started getting a large amount of hits (thank goodness for the credit), and I realized that these people were just cheeking out the site and then moving on. I needed to find a way to keep them on the site, coming back, and sharing it with their friends.

So this is what I did:

  1. I made a “make luvbritney.com your ho me page” button
  2. I made a “share this site on Facebook” button

I figured that the Share on Facebook button would work well considering most of my visitors will be coming from Facebook.  Another factor I realized I need to consider was that I wanted to be able to sell some advertising space on the site at some point. With the current design there wasn’t really any space set aside for ads.  As well I don’t want to suddenly change the design when I started to take on ads, as this will most likely make me lose a few viewers.  I added the homepage and Facebook button on a newly created sidebar area.  This way, when I start to sell ads, there was already “junk” in the sidebar that the average user would be used to.

I figure with the free advertising credits combined with people sharing the site on Facebook, traffic should get off to a really good start.  So far after two days of being live I have had:

Unique Visits: 354
Visits from FB advertising: 324
Organic Visits from FB (not advertising):30
# of People that have clicked on the “Make this your homepage button”: 119
# of People that have clicked on the “Share on Facebook button”:6

The stat that I am super stoked about is the number of people that have made the site their hompage- 119.  I think this will be an important number when selling advertising on the site.  I have a bit more tweaking that I need to do this evening, so I will report backi either tomorrow or the next as to how I am progressing.

In the meantime please feel free to share your feedback on this project, or any ideas that you may have.  Most importantly: Do you think this will work as a money making site?

Hi Chris, I’m watching your progress on this with interest! I have a few domains I’m not doing anything with right now. This could be an option.

An idea…. would it be worth while to add a few freebies to your site to draw people in and get them to spend more time on it… like britney wallpapers, avatars, etc?

Hey thanks for keeping tabs on me! (and for that Feed heads up).

I eventually plan on expanding a bit so that people will spend more time there. From my experience I spend too much time on issues that end up not being successful. So with this project I am keeping it “bare bones” until I know that it will at least be moderately successful.

Britney Avatars…that’s a good idea, thanks Skully.

Hey Chris, this is Ren from the old I Review You site (I’m dropping it…).

I’m glad to see you’re focusing on doing something about stuff you left aside earlier. I’ve seen the site before the changes and it does look better now. The numbers for the ad campaign also look good! And that homepage number… OUCH! I jumped off my chair the moment I saw it (I’m glad you did too :P).
One of the best thing about a Britney-related search (or whatever “big hit” search) is that there are A LOT of sponsored results, so you’ll may end up earning some of that money too. Too little? Perhaps. Better than nothing, nevertheless.

And as far as I Review You goes… I’m dropping cause that was temporary, before I could focus 100% on my main activity (arts). So now that I’m with a group and working on projects, I’m leaving it. But since I got the domain registered until March next year… maybe I should go for a LuvBritney strategy? :P

Keep on rocking the free world!

1. It’s good to hear from you again.
2. How did you know Neil Young’s ‘Rockin in the Free World’ was my kryptonite?

The numbers do look good- I attribute that to the Facebook ads credit. I’m spending $20 per day, and the hundy in credits won’t last long!

I attribute the homepage number to the strong call to action button. Of course, even though today it is now at 181, I can only track who has clicked the button, I cannot track who has put there homepage back to its default…but big numbers make me feel good.

The other number I am working on increasing is the “Share on Facebook.” This is where the site will have a touch of longevity- I hope people will continue to share on Facebook after my advertising credits run out!

I went to your holokinesis.net site and I was looking for art, adn could not find any. Is there a portfolio at all?

2. LOL who would know?!

What about adding a shoutbox of sorts on the site? People love to leave a msg and if they see some there too, they feel even more inclined to post something. Just an idea. Good luck finding other coupons online. :)

Erm, yes. We’re right on the portfolio thing right now. I’m expecting a license agreement in the following days and we’ll be making the projects section available soon. I’ll let you know when it happens. :)

You should add a few more buttons too:

Share in Google Reader

This is the most important one, since it gets you shared lots of other places, as well, because lots of people have their Google Reader account hooked up to other things, such as friendfeed, facebook, mybloglog, sidebar on their blog, other social networks. When they select this option, they can post lots of places in one shot, rather than having to click a bunch of buttons to share everywhere, one at a time.

I only have the Blogger instructions posted, but I am sure a smart guy like you can figure it out. I just haven’t had the time to put together something specifically for Wordpress, static pages, and other CMS’s…and make a page on my software site for it all.

Friendfeed is a powerful social network that most do not understand the marketing potential it has. Take a look at your server logs. I have shared a few of your posts from here & dorkandbeans on there. (one of my followers loved your oompa loompa post enough to submit it to StumbleUpon)

And fix your Twitter button. It’s pointing to digg.com!

Thanks for the info! I know that Ed Dale (of the 30 Day Challenage) swears by friend feed, although I haven’t check it out too much. It seems that FF has the power to rank high in search engines as well. Whenever I am searching for things I quite often see FF in the first few results.

Thanks for the Twitter thing. I have been meaning to change it, but have seemed to forget. I was searching for the post to Twitter link/script but could not find anything quickly so I put it off to the side, and apparently forgot.

I’m such a scatter brain. I swear if I ever become successful at any of my online ventures it’s for one of two reasons:

1: My readers have taken care of me and pointed me in the right direction.
2: I “Forest Gump” my way into something awesome

You could even make it social with Google Friend Connect at the bottom of the page.

Let your visitors talk to each other with a wall gadget and post a playlist of Britney tunes with the iLike gadget. (You can later replace this one with some sort of affiliate widget that can get you paid to push her music)

The benefit to this is how they can invite their friends, and social interaction between all the Britney fans on your site is nothing but a good thing, that keeps them there longer, allows them to make new friends, and makes them think twice about removing it as their home page. (it would be harder to stay in touch with all their new friends they made on your site)
